MorphisecΒ hasΒ discovered aΒ brand-newΒ variant ofΒ Babuk ransomware.Β The new variantΒ usesΒ theΒ BabukΒ ransomware source codeΒ leakedΒ on Russian language hacker forums last year, combined with new evasive techniquesΒ based onΒ open-sourceΒ loaders.

Threat actors usedΒ thisΒ previously unseen variantΒ to target a large manufacturing company with more than 10,000 workstations and server devices.Β The attack bypassed theΒ customer’sΒ nextΒ generationΒ anti-virusΒ (NGAV)Β and endpointΒ protection platformΒ (EPP).Β The new variant could also evade industry-leading endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions at the time of the attack.
